Nea Roda

The quiet fishing village with endless golden sands and a crystal clear blue sea. The beach is endless, the sunsets are stunning and the scenery is green and luscious.
The picture postcard fishing village of Nea Roda is nestled in the narrowest point of the Athos peninsula which is one of the promontories of Halkidiki, in Northern Greece. A long promenade, lined with traditional Greek tavernas and coffee shops on one side and a seemingly endless sandy beach on the other. Most establishments offer recliners and wicker umbrellas on the beach. They are free to use and you can relax while sipping your favourite drink, with the surf splashing at your feet.
The fishing port is just outside the village, crowned by the little old church of St Theodoros, at the very top of the hill, which has become a very popular venue for weddings and christenings.
The ideal holiday location
Nea Roda is the ideal holiday location because it offers a laid back style of living. It is blessed with rolling green hills, sandy coves and endless countryside to explore.
Because of it’s position it is convenient to visit both sides of the peninsula. You can see the Byzantine monasteries of Mount Athos or you can spend endless hours on the beach of your choice, explore the countryside or spend relaxing time at one of the seaside tavernas and enjoy the endless variety of Greek food.
You can start your day taking breakfast at the local patisserie. Filter coffee and hot sweet smelling pastries under the shaded canopy by the shore. Then decide which beach you should try. A quiet cove or a busier beach bar. Should you stay in there seafront and use the umbrellas provided by the local shops or explore the countryside.
Lunchtime and dinner is a pleasure. Choose one of the seafront restaurants, which offer delicious fresh fish which was landed this very morning, accompanied with the local world famous Mount Athos wine. One restaurant provides live Greek music and dancing. Or you may prefer one of the bars where you can say until the morning.
Choice of a beach
Because of it’s position at the narrowest point Near Roda has a choice of a beach on both sides of the peninsula. Endless sand, clear blue water and secret coves to be discovered. The beach in front of the village and another of others close by have been awarded a blue flag.
Mount Athos
Mount Athos is a unique monastic community of 20 monasteries and many other smaller hermitages. Nea Roda is close to the border of Mount Athos and offers the opportunity to visitors to view the unique for their Byzantine architecture monasteries or even visit them.
The Xerxis Canal
Nea Roda is well known for it’s position at the Xerxis Canal, one of the biggest engineering projects in ancient. Greece. According to the ancient historian Herododus, Xerxis, the powerful king of Persia invaded Greece in 480 B.C. Ten years before his predecessor Mardonios attempted to do the same.
The icon of Virgin Mary
Nea Roda is well known for the icon of Virgin Mary which is kept in the village church and is considered by the faithful to perform miracles. It is an old icon, unique by the fact that on the front it is painted with the image of Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus and at the back it is painted with the crucifixion.
